DISCLAIMER NOTICE: Updating your name servers according to this guide will change everything for your domain, including any email or other things associated with the domain. If you are not sure what it means to change name servers, please contact us instead and we will help you.

If you have existing DNS records for your domain that you need to keep, be sure to copy those settings to Templ before changing name servers.

Before you update your name servers
Before you update your name servers, you should start by updating your domains "A-Record" and point it to your Templ server IP. The server IP can be found on the Website details page in the Templ Panel.

NOTE: If you ONLY want to move your website to Templ (and not email etc..) then you should ONLY change the A-record for your domain.

How to update your name servers

The first step is to add the domain the Templ Panel and selecting Add domain from external registrar.

After that you will be greeted by the following message:

"Your domain has been added, but it has no SSL certificate yet. A certificate will be generated once the NS records are set and propagated."

Below are the steps and information on how to change your NS (name server) records, and how to check if your domain has propagated.

How to update your Name servers with your registrar.

In order for Templ to handle your domain automatically, you need to update the name servers with your domain registrar to the correct Templ name servers.

Find your Templ name servers

In the Templ Panel, click Domains in the left menu followed by clicking on the domain you want to update. You will then see the assigned name servers to that domain.

Below is a screenshot for reference only. The name servers in the example below may not be the same as yours.

Here are links to popular domain registrars and their how-to guides for updating Name Servers, be sure to use "Custom DNS". Click the arrow to the left to expand.

Is your registrar not in the list? Not sure how to update your name servers?

Send us a message and we will help out, or reach out to your domain registrar and they will be able to help you as well.

Note: After updating your name servers, allow 4 to 8 hours for other networks to access information for .com and .net domain names, and allow 24 to 48 hours for other networks to access information for all other domain extensions.

How to check if your name servers have propagated

The easiest way to check if your name servers have propagated around the world is to use DNS Checker.

Simply enter your domain name in the box, and in the dropdown field select "NS" and then click Search.

If your name servers have propagated, they should show "ns-cloud-XY.googledomains.com" as a result. Keep in mind that certain domains take up to 48 hours to propagate around the world.

How to generate the SSL certificate manually

In case your SSL certificate has not been generated automatically, you can do it manually in the Templ Panel. Keep in mind that you should wait until your name servers have propagated before you do this.

To generate the SSL certificate manually in the Templ Panel, follow these steps:

  1. Click on Domains in the left menu

  2. Click on your Domain (find the correct one in the list if you have more than one site hosted on Templ), and then click "Generate SSL Certificate"
